近年來由於研究典範的移轉，使得俗民誌研究的理論與方法受到相當的重視與採用。但受到新馬克斯主義及女性主義的影響，質性研究學者發現若僅將研究重心放在探討社會個體的微觀層面，實是忽略了文化、社會制度、集體意識的固著性 (embeddedness),以及他們與局部詮釋間糾纏而型塑出的社會關係。這表示俗民誌研究不能僅拘泥於行動者間的談話與互動(局部脈絡情境)，卻不去探討之所以形成如此行動的鉅觀因素(社會制度、價值觀念、歷史意識型態…)。
