School-based management had been one of the major strategies to improve education in many advanced countries since the last decade of the twentieth century. It is also well recommended as a main trend for educational reform in Taiwan recently. But its impact on schooling has not been documented well in Taiwan. So this study was attempted to explore the applicability of school-based management in Taiwan junior high schools. For this purpose, in addition to literature review, a questionnaire survey was employed to collect data. After analyzing the collected data, the conclusions we reached are: 1.There is a great necessity to implement SBM. 2.There is a great feasibility to implement SBM. 3.The autonomy of school budget is strongly approved at most. 4.However, to school personel affairs, the empowerment is much less approved. 5.School-based curriculum development is responded favourably. Based on the conclusions mentioned above, some suggestions we recommended are as follows: 1.The compromised model of SBM is more appropriate to be adopted. 2.Deregulation and devolution remains to be strengthened. 3.The role of the Bureau of Education must be redefined and readjusted. 4.The load of teachers must be reduced. 5.The professional growth of teachers is to be encouraged.
