After the birth of Jin Ping Mei, the trend of “the secular novel” developed in Chinese classical novel writing. Although the definition of “secular novel” remains unsettled, Jin Ping Mei and the Red Chamber are the peaks of this genre, agents which others cannot compete. Lin Lan Xiang, a novel written in the early Ching dynasty, is regarded as an important connection between the two masterpieces in terms of “the secular novel” set in family life. This article talks about the writing style and technique, and the implicit thought of Lin Lan Xiang. It also further researches its significance in the historical development of “the secular novel.”
