This article discusses "What influence does language have on unification / independence (national identity)?" It proposes a method to eliminate the faulty idea that common sense "language is just a means to communication." Then, it looks squarely at the role of language in the nation. So when a government draws up its language policy it must consider each "mother tongue" without discrimination. Language is a kind of culture. The government had in mind a concept of value and thinking. Furthermore, it was the intermediary between the humanities and natural sciences, because a people's existence relies on its language. So, Taiwan Hakka's exhortation from their father that "It would rather sell its ancestor's farmland than betreay its mohter tongue." Then, the author quoted from outstanding achievements of language scholars to compare language policies from Japanese governed Taiwan and Chen-I managed Taiwan until KMT controlled Taiwan. It studied the influence of language policy on politics, economics, culture, psychologically and social structure.
