Le 樂, or “happiness, “ is one of the most important things that people strive for in the search for meaning in their lives. In the history of Chinese philosophical thought, essays on le are plentiful. In Zhuangzi莊子, zhile wule至樂無樂 is a famous discourse. Based on an analysis of the relevant passages regarding le in Zhuangzi, this article seeks to point out that “intention of like or desire” is the most significant and characteristic principle, and zhile wule means “the highest level of intention is no intention” -a manifestation of wuwei無為and dao道, or the “Way.” As for the relationship between le and xiaoyao逍遙, considering the freedom and other basic meanings of xiaoyao, it is conceivable that zhile-being free from dependence on external objects-is yet another description of xiaoyao.
