閱讀的歷程極其複雜，在此過程中，「詞」(word)對於識字與閱讀理解均扮演重要的角色。然而中文的文字排版特性爲字元間的間距皆一致，詞彙的特性並不明顯，中文讀者勢必具備「斷詞」能力以區辨詞彙所在。中文「斷詞」能力爲潛在的心理認知能力，每個人於外顯表現上並不一致，本文試著從既有的閱讀研究、眼動測量、詞間空格調整等研究進行統整歸納，發現中文讀者應具備斷詞能力，且詞間空格的調整亦能對閱讀效能有所提升，顯示斷詞能力在中文閱讀中的重要性。
