Abstract In the course of literary history writing, Hu Shi’s History of Vernacular Literature is often regarded as a paradigm. Although his points of view and ideas seem to be debatable, they do influence the writing of literary history. Based on this observation, the present essay intends to examine how did Hu Shi construct the literary history and how did he highlight the category of “vernacular literature” in the “historical” scope. Besides, this paper also wants to discuss how is this historical exploration related to his “contemporary literary revolution.” To be more precise, the combination of literary revolution and vernacular literature results in Hu Shi’s particular way of thinking about literary history, which centers on literature and furthermore connects itself with other historical dimensions. Such a thinking framework has been reflected in the later works concerning literary history.
