"道"不僅是道家哲學的最高概念,也是其終極信仰對象。由于"道"具有"無"的特點,沒有固定的形態,也沒有統一的標準,信仰"道"就不是信仰一個固定的、統一的、外在的他者,而是把不確定和變化本身接納于其中。歷史和現實的教訓告訴我們,將有限的東西當成信仰對象往往帶來災難和沖突。另外,信仰"道"也不是信仰任何高高在上者,而是"道法自然","道"隨順萬物,尊重世間萬物的種種差異,并輔助各種差異的充分展開。所以"道"沒有統一的形態,趨近"道"也沒有統一的方式,"道"把權力下放給人類,讓人成為自己的主人。對"道"的這種信仰,有助于人群凝聚、成長為一個有序、自由且有神圣感的社會。

The Dao is not only Daoism’s highest philosophical concept but also its ultimate object of faith.Since the Dao has the special characteristic of wu(nothingness)and lacks any fixed form or unified standards,faith in the Dao is not faith in a fixed,uniform,or external Other.Instead,this type of faith incorporates uncertainty and change within itself,and historical events reveal to us that faith in limited things always leads to conflict and disaster.Moreover,faith in the Dao is not only a belief in some external and high Other,but in the idea that the Dao"models what is natural."The Dao,in fact,accords with the myriad things,respects their unique and numerous variations,and supports the realization of their individual selves.Therefore,the Dao does not have a single form,and there is no single path to reach it.The Dao relinquishes power to humanity and allows each human being to become the master of their own mind.Faith in the Dao has the potential to assist human groups in coming together in an orderly and free society which possesses a sense of the sacred.
