空間不僅承載著具體的人事物，主體的欲望與記憶等印記也溢塞每一特定的空間；文學文本中常存有一生產形塑意象的空間。空間化為符號，記錄著不同時空中的歷史與文化情境，譬如紐約的中國城與皇后區，雖然地處同一都會空間，其所形塑之少數民族社區之異質文化，卻分別具備不同的文化寓意、價值、及情感。而這些空間的意象在文本（text）中透過語言的再現（representation）之後，明顯展現出不同空間、不同主體的屬性認同。劉柏川（Eric Liu）在《偶然生為亞裔人》（The Accidental Asian）1中，透過記憶回溯主要敘事場景——城郊的白人高級社區與城中亞裔陰暗聚所，在敘事中凸顯美國社會因城市晉紳化（gentrification）現象所造成的空間沿著性別、階級、種族分界而區隔的現實。在記敘對特殊空間（如中國城）的經歷過程，敘述者的屬性認同無所遁形。本論文旨在分析文中的空間敘述，透過經由語文再現的記憶中的空間意象，檢視《偶》文作者劉柏川的認同屬性。
