In recent years, controlled writing has replaced free writing as the major task type in assessing examinees’ Mandarin Chinese writing proficiency in both college entrance exams and exams for civil servants here in Taiwan. This new trend has attracted the attention of many scholars and teachers and has generated heated discussion on the island. This paper traces the origin of contemporary controlled writing test back to “Jia Fu” in the Tang Dynasty (618-907A.D.). This paper looks into the test specifications in Jia Fu, citing examples and comparing them with contemporary writing proficiency test items. In addition, the seven proficiency descriptors identified in Jia Fu are examined along the lines of Anderson & Krathwohl’s (2001) revision of B. S. Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives.
