For the contemporary researchers in social science, who are overwhelmed by expanding domination of western political theories, it is undoubted that further exploration in traditional Chinese political theories seems unpopular and unproductive. On the one hand, researchers on both sides are different in theoretical training and interests, which makes the situation even worse. On the other hand, the orthodox Chinese political theories were concentrated on Confucius-Mencius system, and Hsun-Tzu’s opinions were, to a degree, misinterpreted and depreciated. Ever since the “May Fourth Movement,” when the orthodoxy was overthrown, other schools of traditional Chinese political theories have been dismissed for being irrelevant to the modernization of China, and Hsun-Tzu’s theory certainly was no exception. This paper is intended to clarify the Confucius-Hsun-Tzu tradition with the macrocosmic approach rather than the traditional microcosmic approach and demonstrate its relevance to contemporary political theories and practices. This macrocosmic approach is intended to illustrate the following main principles: 1). methodological historicism; 2). limited and necessary investigation of documents; 3). presumption of theoretical totality; 4). attribution to historical and theoretical contexts. The above four principles are virtually interconnected. The macrocosm of Hsue-Tzu’s political theory could be fairly re-established, the dialogue between Hsue-Tzu’s political theory and the dominant western theories could be created, and Hsue-Tzu’s insights into contemporary studies could be discovered.
