本研究旨在發展一種強調「局勢中介」(conjunctural mediation)過程的傳點,希望更適當地處理傳播與國族認同的關係。藉由多重與方法分析結果的呈現,本文論證國族認同形構是一個局勢中介的過程,而傳播媒介則是此局勢中介過程中不可或缺的一部份。換句話說,本文主張傳播媒介之於國族認同的形成,有其長期、累積的「效果」,但拒絕接受傳統效果點指導的簡化論點,以其無法掌握傳播媒介的族關係的複雜性。本文論證存在著一種穿透省籍、族群界線,中介於媒介文本與閱聽人接收過程的感知結構,並解釋具有某種「混而不亂」、「雜存」特質的臺灣主體認同,如何在臺灣戰後(特別是一九七○年代以降)的歷史局勢變化與共同媒介經濟中形成。
Questions surrounding the genesis, diffusion and construction of national identity, and especially the impact of the media on the continuity and contingency of that identity, have generated an intense debate among scholars. These questions are studied here with particular reference to the case of Taiwan. by using a variety of methods and multiple sources of data, this article probes how the sense of national identity has been discursively represented by the media in Taiwan. It also examines how the Taiwanese audience has engaged with a spectrum of mass-mediated identities, accommodating them in different ways within the changing political and media landscapes. It concludes with a discussion of a hybrid yet Taiwan-based identity, in which ethnic antagonisms have been practically reconciled. By way of the ‘conjectural mediation’ process of which the audio-visual media are a constitutive part, a commonly shared ‘structure of feeling’ has been emerging to sustain this peculiar form of hybrid nationhood.
