本文是以社會學角度探討「新興宗教運動」一詞的意涵及相關問題。二次大戰後世界各地出現了許多新的宗教團體，有關這些新宗教團體的研究，成為當代宗教社會學的重要研究課題。 在西方一般民間的用法上，以cult來指稱這些新的宗教團體。宗教社會學對於研究對象，並不採取神學或教義上的判斷，落入正統／異端以及宗教的真／偽的論爭當中，因此傾向於以「新興宗教運動」指稱這些新的宗教團體，「新興宗教運動」一詞乃是一中立性的語詞。 宗教運動在西方歷史上是常態，因此二次戰後的宗教運動被稱為「新」宗教運動，乃是相對於先前的宗教運動而言。另外，也因為當代這些宗教運動的特質，以及它自對社會以及個人的衝擊，因此而被稱為「新」。至於稱為運動，則是因為這些新宗教團體通常具有運動的性質，並且在不斷變動之中。 作者在本文中也討論了宗教社會學的「教會—宗派—崇拜」這一組概念，並指出它們對於理?新興宗教運動的幫助，以及其限制。最後並討論了有關新興宗教運動發生的原因，以及新興宗教和大社會的關係所顯示的意義。

After the World WarⅡ, there are many new religious groups around the world. The topics about these new religious groups became an important research field of sociology of religion. The meanings of “New Religious Movement” are explored from the sociological perspective in this paper. To avoid the ethical and theological judgments, sociologists use the term “new religious movement” to refer these new groups instead of “cult” preferred by media and common people. In the western history, the occurrence of religious movements is a normal phenomenon. Relative to the forward religious movement, the religious movements occurred in the post WWⅡ period are referred as “’new’ religious movement”. The typology of “church-sect-cult” and its limits to apprehend the new religious movements are also discussed. Finally, the resons why new religious movements occurred are under scrutiny.
