　　　　　本文試圖從文化價值體系的角度，來探討中國受測者的社會心理及受測行為。借以檢討當前社會心理學研究領域之過份依賴評定量表，特別是西方研製的量表，所可能帶來對研究結果解釋的困擾。作者進而呼籲研究工具多元化及本土化的必要性及緊急性。

　　　　　This paper aims at elucidating that Chinese subjects, in their attempts to follow theinstructions of a typical rating scale, are faced with a dilemmatic situation: they are, on theone hand, subjected to a greater social pressure (than their Western counterparts) to complywith the researcher's demand to rate the scale items as truthfully as possible. On the otherhand, due to the influence of cultural values such as "selflessness" and "self-control", they findit unnatural and therefore requires much more cognitive efforts to express private feelingsand opinions in a public and unfamiliar environment. The authors use research in person perception to illustrate that one of the possible waysto escape from this dilemmatic situation is to rate the test items in terms of items' socialdesirability. This systematic error becomes an even more complicated problem when thesemantic meanings of some Western-originated scale items change evaluatively after theyhave been translated into Chinese. The authors then use the study of the Chinese "self-concept" to outline a second dilemmaChinese subjects are faced with. The cultural value of "modesty" which is deeply rooted inmost Chinese, puts a greater pressure on Chinese subjects to rate themselves moderately thantheir Western counterparts. The pressure is especially great among the highly cultivated; i. e.people with a sound self-concept. This is because an important part of the Chinese self-cultivation is to eradicate self-complacency. This dilemmatic situation renders Westernconceptualization of the self-concept incomplete and Western-originated self-concept scalesquestionable in discriminating Chinese subjects. The problems discussed in this paper point to the urgent need in the study of Chinesesocial psychology, for (1) the localization of research instruments; and (2) the selective andcareful use of rating scales.
