Chinese scholarship in twentieth century, benefited from the influx of Western tradition of self-reflection, reflects on whether Confucianism is a religion in its own right. Recognizing the character of Confucianism, the staple opinion of the majority of scholars, both in China and abroad, has been that Confucianism is not a religion, which is the human business dealing with the otherworldly. This essay reexamines the issue along three major themes: (1) what religion is,(2) what Confucianism is,and (3) the analogy between them. This essay concludes that Confucianism is religious, though perhaps waging less than a religion.
