本論文的目的是在說明：作者如何以建構實在論的科學哲學作為基礎，建構出儒家關係主義的理論體系。作者首先根據「實在論」的哲學，建構出〈人情與面子〉的理論模型；再以此一模型作為基礎，用結構主義的方法分析儒家文化傳統的深層結構。用何友暉「方法論的關係主義」來看，〈人情與面子〉的理論模式和儒家文化傳統的深層結構都是研究者所建構的「微世界」，旨在描述華人社會中的行動者如何與「不同關係的其他人」進行互動（Ho,1998）。當行動者在其生活世界中依此而與他人進行互動時，他所知覺到的社會世界將形成如費孝通（1948）所描述的「差序格局」，或許烺光（1971）所描述的「心理社會圈」。當個人在其生活世界中和他人衝突時，他必須採用各種不同的衝突化解模式，來恢復其「社會心理均衡」。
