臺灣在日治殖民中期開始，就出現大量的觀光設施與旅遊活動；但這種看似「現代觀光」的表象，其實慘雜著濃厚的殖民性格。也就是說，這段觀光勃興的歷史，蘊含雙重的社會意義：一方面，由於殖民者的觀光需求，臺灣在殖民時期出現大量具有現代意義的觀光設施；另一方面，在殖民主義式的被建構意象下，1930年代臺灣卻又出現不少本地人的旅遊現象。本文試圖對此二元現象提出分析，說明日本本國在昭和時期「新文化」帶動之觀光熱潮下，殖民者開始建立臺灣的觀光設施、開發觀光論述；而這個殖民觀光的硬體基礎，卻在日治中期造就了臺灣本地人民獨特的觀光樣態，既富含節慶性格、且以農民為主。透過對歷史資料的重新分析，本文指出，日治臺灣被日本殖民政府建構為「觀看對象」，而發展出一條早熟的、但朝向現代觀光的路徑。
The author uses two perspectives to discuss the sociological aspects of tourism that resembled modern tourism in Taiwan during Japanese colonial rule: a) colonial-constructionalism, in which railroad-tourist promotion facilities and propaganda in mechanisms were created to present Taiwan as an object for Japanese gaze in line with the New Culture that emerged in Japan in the 1920s; and b) local tourism development, with the tourist boom associated with the 1935 Great Exhibition having an unusual "carnival" characteristic, and with most rail-train tourists coming from the Taiwanese peasant class instead of labor class. Accordingly, travel in Japanese ruled Taiwan is best understood as a "premature"colonial construction leading to modern tourism.
