The study focuses on three factors – “knowledge about aging”, “attitudes toward the elderly” and “willingness to serve the elderly”, the subjects are technical university students. The study seeks to know (1) students’ present knowledge level, (2)how students differ on knowledge regard these three factors, (3)relationship between the factors, (4)if background variables, knowledge about aging and attitudes toward the elderly can predict the willingness to serve the elderly, (5)show routes of how background variables, knowledge about aging and attitudes toward the elderly influence the willingness to serve the elderly.
The research adopted the questionnaire survey and utilizes the “Undergraduate Students’ Cognition toward Aging and the Elderly Questionnaire” as tool, students from 19 technical universities were selected by two-step purpose and random sampling. Total 2120 questionnaires were distributed, 2022 questionnaires retrieved and 1947 of those are valid (sample validation 91.84%). Statistic methods applied include descriptive statistics, multiple analysis of variance, product moment and canonical analysis, stepwise regression analysis and path analysis.
According to findings of the research, conclusions are as follows:
1.Continued education program students and regular students hold upper intermediate level of knowledge about aging, with positive attitudes toward the elderly, and upper intermediate level of willingness to serve the elderly.
2.Continued education program students have higher level of knowledge about aging than regular students. There is no significant difference on attitudes toward the elderly among continued education program students and regular students. Regular students have more willingness to serve the elderly than continued education program students.
3.Students of medical, nursing, and social welfare related majors are more positive on attitudes toward the elderly, and with higher willingness to serve the elderly.
4.Female students have significant positive attitudes toward the elderly and are more willing to serve them than male students.
5.Attend social clubs, study Gerontology and Psycho-Gerontology helps to promote students’ positive attitudes toward the elderly, as well as their willingness to serve the elderly.
6.There are significant correlations between knowledge about aging, attitudes toward the elderly and willingness to serve the elderly.
7.Background variables, knowledge about aging and attitudes toward the elderly all together can effectively predict student’s willingness to serve the elderly.
It is suggested that technical universities should offer courses related to Gerontology and aging, amend Gerontology course content and faculties, offer continued education program students opportunities to join social clubs. Service and public welfare oriented social clubs should be emphasized and financed by schools. Nursing and welfare related departments should increase the population of male students. Educational administration organizations should respond to the growing senior population, promote training of professionals of senior education; select and send teachers oversea for educational gerontology and social gerontology studies; encourage universities to establish senior education and service related departments, in order to cultivate professional of this realm. Future studies should cover regular university student, use standardized test questions to compare knowledge about aging, apply both qualitative and quantitative research method in analysis.
