Self-presentation refers to the process of controlling how one is perceived by other people. There are 2 types of self-presentation: self-verification and impression management. This study explores the possible behaviors and tactics individuals employ when others do not accept the impression they are trying to convey and examines whether self-effacing behavior is merely an impression management strategy for Chinese people. In Experiment 1, 47 university students were assigned to a 3 (interaction partner: friend vs. acquaintance vs. stranger) × 2 (domain: agentic vs. communal) factorial design. The results indicated that individuals create a positive impression of themselves in the agentic domain in front of strangers and they engage in negative impression management in the communal domain when interacting with friends. Impression discrepancy was manipulated in Experiment 2. One 117 university students were assigned to 2 (impression management conditions: positive vs. negative) × 3 (impression discrepancy condition: positive vs. no discrepancy vs. negative) experimental conditions. Results showed that individuals used impression verification when a stranger could not perceive the positive impression they had tried to convey. We also found that when friends agreed with the negative impression individuals created in the communal domain, those individuals would engage in remedial behaviors to enhance their friends' evaluations. The results demonstrate that self-effacement is an impression management strategy for culturally Chinese people.
