The purpose of this self-study was to investigate my English teaching practice in Ming Chuan University. Suggestions for improvements are brought forward with the theory that self-study, improved English teaching practice and a more efficient integration of educational technology are essential for promoting students’ learning interests in English. This study aimed to explore the following three research questions: (1) Were my skills of English teaching efficient in matching my students’ learning expectations? (2) Did I develop enough awareness of self-study to understand my teaching practice? (3) Did my students become more interested in learning English after I used educational technology to improve my English teaching? The participants of this study included 136 college students studying English in Ming Chuan University located in Tao Yuan. The present research adopted two instruments. The most important instrument was a questionnaire which is a self-reporting survey consisting of 16 items which asked participants to rate their answers on a five point Likert scale. The second instrument was an interview guide used to probe participants’ perception of their English class. Regarding the findings of the current study, all the students’ learning expectations are satisfied because I have become more competent in my English teaching skills by interacting more efficiently with them. Although the majority of the participants were interested in learning English in my classes, they would have enjoyed the course content more if I had played interesting video clips more frequently and had read or told tell stories. In turn, they would have taken more initiative to talk in English in different conversation topics.
Finally, this self-study also took students’ core competencies into consideration and the theory of transformative learning. The reason for this is that one of the teachers’ responsibility is to guide students to become successful by taking part in their social lives. Teachers need to help students finding practical solutions to problem and challenges to function well in society. When students’ learning interests are taken into consideration with the support of teacher’s self-study, improved English teaching practiceand more efficient integration of educational technology, they will be able to make their dreams come true.
