自十九世紀公教育系統興起以來,有關國家在教育中的角色即爭論不斷。特別是在馬克思主義的傳統中,對於國家的分析成為了解教育控制與變遷的重要面向。然而,鑒於台灣與西方國家於政治、經濟制度上的差異,馬克思主義國家與教育關係理論在台灣的適用性與解釋力,頗值得進一步檢證。本文於回顧工具論、結構論、「資本主義國家」觀點、葛蘭西、以及 Green 的理論後發現,由於忽視全球政經動力與國家內部矛盾之間交互作用所產生的影響,馬克思主義對於國家與教育關係的概念化,在解釋二次戰後國民黨政權於台灣的統治,以及教育於維繫與轉換國家權力的角色上有其限制。本文最後指出以台灣歷史特殊性為焦點的研究取向實有其必要性。
There have been debates over the proper role of the state in public schooling in the last century. In particular, the study of the state, within a Marxist tradition, has become an important aspect for analyzing the state's control over schools and educational change in Western countries. However, Marxist theorizing of state/education relationships may be questionable when applied to Taiwan given the differences between the West and Taiwan in both political and economic systems. This article finds that Marxist state theories may be limited to analyzing how the KMT state and education in Taiwan are shaped by interactions between the global dynamics and internal contradictions within the state. Finally, it suggests that more research situated in the context of Taiwan is needed if we are to understand the historic contingency of the KMT's power over schools and the possibilities for educational change in Taiwan.
