The economy in Taiwan is closely related to water conservation development. When sorting out seventy county(city) gazetteers in Taiwan post WWII, there are only three volumes of officially revised Taoyuan County Gazetteer-”Taoyuan County Gazetteer”, Revised ”Taoyuan County Gazetteer”, and ”Newly Revised Taoyuan County Gazetteer” found have been proceeding with the revision of water conservation consistently, which have also retained ”Pi-Tong” (man-made ponds) from colonial period in Qing Dynasty, ”Taoyuan Da Zun” (irrigation canals) from Japanese colonial period, and post war ”Shihmen Reservoir” on Taoyuan mesa. Water conservation not only has changed the living environment, but has also displayed proofs the Taoyuan economy interchanges as historical records of human and water interaction. There are five characteristics and values firmly contained in analyzing the three volumes of revision of 'Water Conservation' in ”Taoyuan County Gazetteer”, they are 'advancing revision manners', 'revealing Pi-Tong culture values', 'highlighting contemporary water conservation images', 'investigating farmland water conservation organizations', and 'offering historical records of economical transformation', which are the worthiest reference documents to investigate the water conservation history of northern Taiwan farmlands nowadays. Although there are still some omissions, but the defects do not outweigh the merits. However, if field investigation can be supplied in future official gazetteer revising in Taiwan and to interview senior in-service water conservation practitioners as 'living documents' to transcribe errors of the recorded data, this will surely benefit a lot in offering authentic references.
