清末民初,或可稱為中國近代轉型期,是中西文化在總結自強運動的表層互動試探之後,開始深度消化理解的關鍵時刻。當時的知識分子提出了不同的會通模式,以取得政壇或學壇上的發言權。林語堂是中國近代著名的作家,他的作品以幽默、閒適的風格在現代文學史別樹一格,也是較有系統的以英文向西方介紹中國文化的中國知識分子。其中,《京華煙雲》是最具代表性的作品,他所表現的文化觀點,代表當時中國知識界的流行傾向。本文擬將觀察重點放在作者營構的對話情節,從敘事話語的角度切入,藉由文本裡的陳述語句提供線索。最終關切的是:《京華煙雲》如何形塑儒家「士志於道」的價值取向。
The period during the later Ching Dynasty and the early Republic of China, the time which was called the transitional time of modern China, was the key to starting to absorb Chinese and the West cultures deeply after the surface interaction of the Self-Strengthening Movement. The intellectuals at the time offered different types of communication in order to get the voice in the political or academic world. Lin Yu-tang was a famous writer in the modern times of China. His works were written in a humorous and free style, and quite particular in the history of contemporary literature. He was the Chinese intellectual who introduced Chinese cultures to the West in English systematically as well. Among his works, “Moment in Peking” is the most representative. The cultural viewpoint he performed represented the trend of the Chinese intellects at the time. The focus of this article is the plot of the dialogue which the author created. To cut to the chase in the viewpoint of narrating dialogue, the clues according to narrative sentences of the text are offered. The most important thing of all is how he created the value of the Confucianists, “a learned person makes efforts in the principle”, in “Moment in Peking”
