Most of the renowned ci societies in the Republican era were founded in major cities like Shanghai, Tianjin, and Nanjing. But there were also some lesser poetry societies active in remote counties and villages. One of these was the White Snow Ci Society in Yixing, Jiangsu province. Consisting of only eight members, the White Snow Ci Society nevertheless carried a stronger local colour as compared to its counterparts in major cities, and the members also had tight kinship among themselves. Thus, to study this society will help us understand more about local culture and the literati’s life and thoughts in village areas during the Republican era. Although not all of the members of the White Snow Ci Society can be dubbed Qing loyalists, they similarly expressed their anxieties and disappointment about the time, and extolled Yixing’s local legends, tradition, and worthies. Through writing the classical form of ci, they reconstructed and strengthened the gradually disappearing cultural memories and atmosphere of Yixing, and maintained their local identity and fellow affections. This article first examines the members’ backgrounds of the White Snow Ci Society, their ci aesthetics and form of their group activities. Then, by analysing four series of their works, it explicates how the members promoted local culture and expressed their loyalist sentiments in their corresponding lyrics.
