During the feudal period, imperial power exercised a pivotal influence on culture, and this was especially true as regards calligraphy and calligraphy students' choices of topics during the Tang Dynasty. Taking Wang Xi-zhi as a case study, this paper aims first to view the overall environment for calligraphy in the Tang Dynasty, second to explore the characteristics it presented to the world, and third, focus on the effect of the imperial Tang family on the art form, in order to examine the historical context and social demand, and to explore the significance and purposes of the imperial family's choices.
