Work on poverty is a basic job for social workers. The settlement house movement was the origin of community work, by which an elite move to live with the poor in slums. The massive increase of the population of poor people in Taiwan and around the world is caused by globalization. The new underclass is forced to live in disadvantaged neighborhoods with limited resources. A small group of social workers and local people work together with the poor to promote their quality of life in Taiwan. I present 10 touching experiences to show the possibility of community-based developmental social work, beginning with services for children and youth, then for families and their economic life, and including citizenship training and resource networking for the poor. By undertaking such community work, social workers in Taiwan will be able to assist in bringing a new spirit to combat poverty.
