The purpose of this study was to verify the rationale constructions and
relationships among hardiness, personal meaning and death attitude in senior
high school students in Taiwan. These relations were assessed by using the
revised “Personal Views Survey III-R”, “Personal Meaning Profile-B” and
“Death Attitude Profile-Revised”. There were 1,203 senior high school students from various locations invited to fill in the questionnaires. The collected data are processed by Descriptive Statistics, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA),
Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), One-way ANOVA, One-way MANOVA, and Structural Equation Modeling Analysis(SEM) with the statistic software
SPSS. The findings are summarized as follows:
I. There was acceptable goodness-of-fit between the hypothesized structural relationships among hardiness, personal meaning as well as death attitude and the empirical data.
II. There was a significant difference in hardiness among students of different background variables such as gender, the habit of religious belief, family interaction type and health type.
III. There was a significant difference in personal meaning among students of different background variables such as academic systems, public or private school, school region, birth order, the habit of religious belief, family interaction type and health type.
IV. There was a significant difference in death attitude among students of different background variables such as gender, the habit of religious belief, family interaction type and health type.
V. There were significantly correlations among hardiness, personal meaning as well as partial death attitudes of senior high school students.
VI. Personal meaning is the partial mediation of hardiness and conditional acceptance attitude of death, but the full mediation of hardiness and rejective, natural attitude of death.
Based on the findings of this research, concrete suggestions are proposed to senior high school teachers, students, school and educational administration and researchers for future studies.
