To understand how AIDS stigma affects PWH (persons with HIV) and PWA (persons with AIDS) and make medical professional and ordinary people have a better view of and more acceptance of them, the author did her research by ethnography on 40 subjects, including methods of correspondence, OPD assistance, hospital visits and hot-line services, over a period of 13 months from Sept. 1994 to Sept. 1995. Reseacher analyzed the data, which includes individual behaviors, responses, situtions and related professional personnel's responses, recorded in the diary and interview records, and found that the stigma is profoundly related to the traditional Chinese ideology of retribution, family orientation and filial pioty. There is also evidence of gender-discrimination here. Not only are female PWHs and PWAs connected only with "bad girls", but also females' needs of social resources, information and legislation are ignored. Apart from this, the stigma and deviance which affects gay and others is also discussed in this article. Finally, the author makes some suggestions for the revision of laws, the re-allocation of social resources/information and directions for future research.
