Through interviews, the present study analyzed the design of Chinese language textbooks in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Singapore, with an attemp to explore the following three issues: the logic of the content design of Chinese language textbooks, the operational processes of the content design, and the factors that influence the content design. The findings indicated that the content design is mainly based on the curriculum guidelines and textbook editors' rationale, and mostly rely on the curriculum guidelines. Furthermore, the three developmental procedures are estimation, design, and edition phases accordingly. Finally, the interior factors influencing the content include the staff of publishers, design teams, and the research and development mechanisms, while the exterior factors involve governmental policies, review systems, customers' needs, and market competition. Based on the results of this study, some suggestions were provided for publishers, design teams, the government, research institutes, educational practitioners, and future research.
