Accreditation is the main means to maintain quality education of library and information science education in the United States. Standards for accreditation are used to evaluate master's programs in library and information science. This article mainly discusses accreditation and standards of library and information science education in the United States. Firstly, it reviews present state of library and information science schools in the United States. Then, it explores meanings, functions, history, as well as procedures of accreditation for library and information science education. Finally, it studies the "Standards for Accreditation of Master's Programs in Library & Information Studies 1992".
