西元1972年，筆者在臺大人類學系聽了李濟先生的退休演講而頗為感動。至少 ，他想透過科學考古學的推展來改變當時中國人缺少科學精神的問題，以及將中國人對中 國史的視野擴大到長城之外，以跳出中國中心的狹隘世界觀之努力，在筆者看來，他是想 改變中國人的思考方式而在從事「文化革命」，並減以考古學特殊的低值與意表。二十多 年後，筆者有此機會回頭來看臺灣的考古學，不禁有些感慨。顯然，他的「革命」並沒有 成功。因此寫下此文。而文中較具批判性的立場，自是筆者愛之深、責之切的一種關懷與 期望。

　　　　　Year 1996 is the centennial of Taiwan Archaeology. In retrospect, most archaeological works were and still are focusing on reconstructing culture history and past lifeways. Very few, if any, have dealt with greater issue of interpreting sociocultural processes. One can attribute present situation to various factors. However, most important of all are two related epistemological issues. Firstly, the students of Taiwan Archaeology require a sufficient training of social science. Secondly, the students of Taiwan Archaeology require a broader perspective on the cultural development of mankind.
