This research investigates the factors affecting continuity of cooperative relationships of supply chain management. Cooperative relationships of supply chain management emerge as corporates are increasingly towards cooperative efforts to coverage intrafirm and interfirm operational and strategic capabilities into a unified whole to gain competitive advantages. This phenomenon can be seen by a number of cooperative behaviors such as long-term contract, strategic alliance, minority equity investment, and/or joint venture rather than internal activities adopted by the growing companies.
Academic and corporate interest in cooperative relationships of supply chain management has risen considerably in recent years, particular in buyer-supplier relationship. Previous papers contribute to research of factors affecting continuity of buyer-supplier relationship in a narrow manner. Some are based upon resource theory, exchange cost theory, relations marketing, and/or both of them; whereas some focus on psychological contract or social capital in discussing buyer-supplier relationship. However, using a holistic approach to identify the factors affecting continuity of cooperative relationships of supply chain management is sparse. Thus, this paper aims to clarify the relative issues in buyer-supplier linkage by integrating three theories — psychological contract, interorganizational citizenship behavior, and social capital — into a wider research framework. The survey is conducted in the manufacturers in Taiwan’s Synergy Development System.
The results showed that psychological contract exists in the members of supply chains and positively influences citizenship behaviors among organizations. Further, social capital in supply chain cooperative relationships had a positive net effect on developing interorganizational citizenship behavior. Interorganizational citizenship behavior positively impacts on supply chain performance. Finally, synergized influence of interorganizational citizenship behavior and supply chain performance has significant and positive effects on commitments to long-term cooperative relationship in the partners of the supply chain.
All companies in the supply chain have a cooperative orientation; whereas all supply chains in the industry have a competitive relationship. As a result, effective buyer-supplier relationship is made up of a series of cooperative efforts and coordination activities among firms sharing information and carefully proposing contracts. In addition, psychological contract and social capital are playing vital roles in developing effective interorganizational citizenship behavior in buyer-supplier link. By doing so, we can expect win-win scenario with a clear understanding of impacts of interorganizational citizenship behavior on cooperative relationship of supply chain management.
