The inception of this dissertation originated from a self-inflection of my nearly two decades’ endeavor as an elementary school principal. What, as for a school leader, is the most important element that anchors the school leadership? It is my expectation that I would explore thoroughly, through my own journey as a female school leader, the interwoven process and outputs from both the experiences of my life and my role-playing as a principal, and the real meaning, from a feminine experience and perspective, of course, of a female school master.
This is a narrative inquiry oriented research study, to explore leadership stories of myself as a female principal, so as to provide my understandings of and interpretations on leadership experiences from female principals and to constructing a research writing that is meaningful to my own self and one that could enlighten others.
This research tries to answer the following questions: 1. In my journey as a principal, what kind of positions had my earlier life experiences occupied? 2. Since taking on my very first principal responsibility, what were the leadership experiences and spiritual struggle journeys of each term? 3. When leading different schools and encountering diversified cultural, expectation, and challenges originated from both within and without the campuses, what kind of leadership roles have I played? 4. How do I assess my own role as a feminine character and what kind of female principal’s experiences do I possess.
This study tries applying methodology of autobiographic narration to unfolding stories of my journey as a principal, to reconstruct my experience stories and to identify, reflect and understand this female principal’s journey, in the hope to expand and enhance my own understanding through reflections on experiences of my life and on the teaching fields from social, contiguous and contextual perspectives. This journey of research started with root-seeking “Spring Ploughing: sorting out my earlier experiences,” exploring my very root sources for a later educational career, including earlier experiences in my formative years; then, “Summer Weeding: the bountiful years as a teacher,” telling my career stories as a teacher—by narrative writing, I came to aware how these days were closely connected with the current me: every story remembered foretells my later journey as a principal; in the chapter “Autumn Harvesting: heading on the principal leadership,” shifting from 17 principal years’ experience the jewels of my harvest, organizing and threading those jewels to form the thematic “principal leadership” stories.
Finally, the chapter “Winter Storing: anticipating a consummate ending by self-inquiry” tries to responding to the above-mentioned research questions, presenting my reflections on this research process and the reconstruction and expansion of my “self.”
