The weak situation of economic and industrial environment construct the compromise perception (overeducation, and skill defect) of college graduates in their first job. College graduates experience difficulties in overeducation, and skill defect during school-to-work transitions. The effect of opportunity structures (educational stratification and educational types) on compromise perception could not be ignore.
This study took the career compromise as frame to observe the social, psychology and work behaviour phase of overeducation and skill defect, and also examined the effect of career compromise on the satisfaction of school to work transitions. Furthermore, based on the opportunity structures concept, this paper explored the moderating effect of career compromise on satisfaction of school to work transitions. Sample was one-year graduates in general/technical colleges and data was collected from Taiwan Integrated Postsecondary Education Database (TIPED).
The result indicated that among general, technical colleges, or similar department in front of the two, both of overeducation and skill defect can brings negative effect on satisfaction of school to work (H1 supported). Unfortunately, skill defect brings negative effect which are partially higher than overeducation (H1-1, partial supported). Furthermore, on the general- liberal arts and technical - liberal arts type, the negative effect of overeducation are only partially higher than the negative effect of skill defect (H2-1, H2-3, partial supported). Otherwise, overeducation brings negative effect which are highest than skill defect a lot on the technical - liberal arts and technical - liberal arts type (both economic, work satisfaction). And overeducation brings negative effect are lower than skill defect on the general- professional and technical - professional type(H2-2, H2-4, supported). There has the same situation partially on technical - liberal arts type, and skill defect brings the negative effect are mostly on technical-professional type. In general, opportunity structures brings the moderation effect between the career compromise and satisfactions of school to work (H2 supported).
On the implication of theory in this paper, career compromise can advance to the phase of social and work frompsychology. Career compromise is also related to psychological contract and work motivation. Based on the ecological perspective, opportunity structures (include educational stratification and educational types) also can be a moderation model which are related to circumscription compromise theory. Further, opportunity structures are related to selection and job turnover in HR. In addition, this paper is use to the career education and information assistant system to create the helping projects.
