     在此資訊爆炸的社會中,人們為了生存與發展而必須不斷的終身學習,然而,就個人而言,要如何在飛速成長的資訊社會中有智慧地抉擇「如何學」及「學什麼」,則是個人能否將學習當成一種快樂的享受而非負擔的關鍵因素。就整體社會而言,如何啟發佔全人口約三分之二的成人,協助其發展出終身學習的態度、能力與習慣,則是社會健全發展與國家競爭力的展現。 在成人學習的研究中,學者們不但證明「高度有意識的學習」是成人活動的本質外,還有實資料顯示每位成人學習者每年平均花費五百小時在約有五項不同的學習計劃中(Tough, 1989)。近來,學者們更從成人學習的特質、成人為何有自我計畫性的傾向進行研究,並從心理學、社會學、及教育學等多方面的探討自我導向學習的價值觀,再以此研究成果努力建構自我導向學習的理論。 本文將從「成人學習的本質:大多數出於學習者有意識而自願的學習」,這個自我導向習最初的意涵談起,進而探討自我導向學習的定義及實質內涵,其次,從學者們對「自我導向學習」的主張中,探究其背後的一些哲學假設及其所涵攝的教育哲學思想觀點,並兼論何以「自我導向學習」應成為未來教育成功與否的關鍵性指標,因為它是終身學習與終身教育的核素理念,而終身教育是當今最合人性與時代需求的教育思想。最後,從自我導向學習理論建構的內涵中取其對成人教育的一些啟示。
