     課程不是中立的實體,它涉及了學術社群的價值信念與社會思潮。本文藉著追溯社會科的起源,以及其與社會效率說此課程理論之間的關係,來探討學校教育在分配知識與權力時的角色以及課程的本質。文中分別介紹美國社會效率說的起源、主張,以及它對美國社會科成為一門正式科目的影響。藉由這樣的探討,不但教育工作者能對本身的任務有深一層的體認,對於課程研究領域也能增添其豐富性。透過這個研究,我們可以肯定的說,任何有關課程的現狀或對未來的評估,都應該兼顧它的過去發展與牽涉其中的人物思想與主張,也只有這樣才能避免以偏概全、簡化問題的毛病。
