　　　　　認知人類學是1950年代美國的一些學者發展出來的。本文主要目的便是探索、介 紹這個人類學分枝近50年來的發展；尤其是關切該分枝晚近的若干概念－例如基模論（ schema theory）與聯結論（connectionism）－對重新思考人類學的一些重要問題（例如 文化觀念以及文化與個人之間的關係）所可能具有的潛力。在這個探索、介紹的過程中， 本文特別把焦點放在：探討文化與語言之間的關係，因此得以把認知人類學的發展與英國 人類學界的一次公開辯論（主題是「語言是文化的本質」）相銜接。本文指出：文化與 語言之間的關係雖然目前尚無定論，但卻是一個值得深入探究的課題。
　　　　　Cognitive anthropology emerged in the 1950's, and underwent significant changes in the 70's and 80's. This paper aims to explore and introduce this branch of anthropology, especially its latest changes --- schema theory and connectionism --- and also show the potentials it may have for rethinking some important issues in anthropology (e.g.concept of culture and man's relationship with culture). In the process of exploring and introducing, this paper focuses on the complicated relationships between culture and language, thus connecting the development of cognitive anthropology to a key debate among British anthropologists (its topic being"Language is the Essence of Culture"). This paper concludes that, although the relationship between culture and language is as yet undefined, it still remains a subject worthy of further exploration and study.
