The research is a quasi experimental design study assessing picture book instructions on dog animal protection. The purpose is to explore elementary second graders' knowledge and attitudes after using dog animal protection lessons. The sample is two classes of second graders at Heping Elementary School in Taichung City. One class was the experimental group, receiving ten lessons of dog animal protection picture book instruction; the other was a comparison group without instructions. Pre-test was made one week before the instruction and post test was one week following the instruction. The findings are: 1. Picture book instruction of dog animal protection had significant influence on elementary second graders' knowledge and attitudes concerning dog animal protection. 2. Students in the experimental group have significantly higher scores in dog animal protection knowledge and attitude than those in the comparison group. The quantitative information shows that the experimental instruction had distinctive influence on dog animal protection knowledge and attitudes. 3. From class discussions, analysis of learning sheets, reflective diaries of researcher's and teacher' observational record, it was determined that students' learning performance met the expected goals of the instruction. The qualitative data analysis confirmed the performance of instruction.
