This study adopts content analysis to investigate gender roles in Hakka language textbooks of elementary schools, and to examine whether the gender-role bias exists. The analyzing materials consist of all texts and pictures in Hakka language textbooks from the first to the sixth grades, and involve all versions from six publishers - Miaoli County Government, Taoyuan County Government, Hsinchu City Government. Knsh, Nani, and Hanlinco. Results indicate that, for all analyzing categories, gender-role and linguistic biases exist in these Hakka language textbooks of elementary schools. The current study also provides useful suggestions for publishers, editors and teachers who make efforts to edit and revise Hakka language textbooks.
