This study discusses the impact of educational reform on the Mandarin education in primary schools. It begins with a comparison of the contents of the textbooks of the old curriculum (adopted in 1993 and enacted in 1996) and the ones of the so-called Grade 1-9 curriculum policy (declared in 1998, enacted in 2001). It then continues with an analysis of the contents of the textbooks (published by various publishing companies), such as vocabulary, phrase, sentence, text style, etc. We find out a general decrease of element numbers of the curriculum in the textbooks, and the variation of focus of different publishing houses. This leads to our suggestions for further research and a more encompassing edition of the new textbooks.
