近年來，對於高等教育的研究雖然很多，但針對大學新生的研究比較缺乏。本研究分析大學新生選擇主修科系之決策過程，主要以「主修流動／主修選擇」兩個面向來探討；本文主要目的在分析技職體系學生高職與四技兩階段主修科系的異同，並探討新生選定主修領域涉及的社會心理機制。本研究運用「台灣高等教育資料庫」之資料進行量化分析，研究發現如下：一、新生多依自己興趣或就業優勢選擇科系，較不重視「選校不選系」等結構因素。二、重要他人對於個人科系選擇的建議較為保守。三、選擇藝術人文類科者，對所選科系最有主見。四、即使轉換主修類科，學生選擇的科系仍能維持專業養成之一貫性。
