In 2006, under the direction of the Council of Indigenous Peoples, Executive Yuan, the Center for Indigenous Education and Research of National Dong Hwa University was responsible for developing the Fundamental Teaching Material of the Fourteen Indigenous Tribal Cultures in Taiwan, which is now used as the major material for ethnic education in indigenous schools. The current study is an action research project that analyzes the developing process of the textbooks for primary and junior high school students. In terms of the editing, featuring the interesting, practical, and diverse reading contents, this material has followed the principles of integration, sequence, and articulation. In addition, the future application approaches, such as teacher trainings in the material literacy, its combination with courses offered by ethnic education centers, its integration into the related learning areas, and its use as unit supplements to flexible course or Integrative Activities area, will allow this material to carry out its function as a medium for the continuity of indigenous cultures in Taiwan.
