Achieving a remarkable success in the field of musical composition creations by eminent composers is mutually-influenced by various complicated factors. Ten Chinese eminent composers were invited in this study as research participants. These composers have won highly recognition and praise from the public and they were honored with international or national awards, have created musical tide in fashion and historical standing, or became famous from the rapid spread of their musical works. In addition to the in-depth interviews of these eminent composers themselves and 23 other significant people, the study was proceeded with multiple individual researches, in seeking the real life contexts of contemporary eminent composers, from the analysis of interview notes and the non-interfered measuring data etc. This study was aiming to learn the eminent composers’ successful characteristics and creative progress in the field of musical composition creations, and arrived at the following conclusions:
1. Successful Characteristics
The four major characteristics of eminent composers to become success included individual, family, school and society, and these characteristics were mutually interacted and interlocked. Every characteristic was important on the road to success, and having only any one of the characteristics was unable to assist eminent composers in achieving the success when they devoted themselves to the long road of musical composition creation, all these four characteristics interacted one another was needed. The individual characteristic could make them struggle persistently for long time and conquer any hardship; the family characteristics, under its tolerance, could let them create spiritual and popular music close to inside voice; the school characteristics could direct them to study diligently and create unique musical works with typical and rich self-style music culture and vocabularies; and finally the society characteristics could help them to have a foothold on the contemporary and stepping towards the international, which not only supported them possessing a historical standing in cross era, but also expanded a new worldwide territory for contemporary Chinese music.
2. Creative Progress
The creative progress of musical composition of eminent composers was like a circulating circle, in the order of five main stages: “materials gathering - cultivating voice resource and strong original creativity”; “inspiration - coming from sense and ordering rationally”; “creation - organizing materials and gradually constructing”; “accomplishment - self-breakthrough and reaching the new peak”; and “test and verify - presenting musical composition and continuous creation”. The creation of every new musical composition resorted to the eminent composer’s free creative consciousness and was accomplished within the 5-stages circle. Moreover, there were five features to the creation of every new musical composition, including : (1) nature of order; (2) nature of circulation; (3) no time limit; (4) no starting point constraints; and (5) no end point constraints.
