Social studies, combined history, geography and civic education, is the integrated program from the procedure of curriculum development to promote civic competence. The paper begins at discussing the purposes of studying geography and finds that not only are the capabilities designed, such like developing students’ basic knowledge, problem solving skills, value judgments, vision of homeland and global, to fulfill the goal of geography learning but also to prepare students as excellent world citizens. It comes with analyzing geographical concepts of 1-9 social studies curriculum by the views of knowledge structure and confirms that direction, process, landscape, settlement, migration, transport, land use and environment issue are all important geographical basic concepts. At the last part, this paper utilizes theses geographical concepts to illustrate the capability indicators of 1-9 Social studies curriculum and makes some examples for teaching practice.
