“Guanxi” is not only a common phenomenon in the Chinese society, but also a kind of driving forces in our society. It is indeed important and necessary in different areas, such as social life, business managements and academic researches. There were still many gaps to be filled in the past studies of relationship. For example, the definition or the concept of relationship was unclear, the topics were fixed, the results were similar and not concrete, the research was limited to a single field, the classification of relationship theorical models was indefinite, and the key influential mechanism was ignored, etc.
Based on the above, the main purpose of this study was to explore the related issues of the construction of Guanxi behavior effect model in the Chinese society, including the reconceptualization of the concept of Guanxi, the theory construction of Guanxi behavior model, the discussion on trust effect mechanism and empirical researches.First, according to the ideas of Kuhn’s “conceptual evolution” and Thagard’s “conceptual revolution”, this study reconceptualized “guanxi” as a performance of Guanxi behaviors. Second, from Wallance’s view of theory construction of the logic of science in sociology, the study constructed the behavior effect model of antecedents (personal, family and environmental variables) and consequences (life, interpersonal and work variables). Third, the study took “trust” as the variable to explore the mediating effects and the moderating effects between guanxi behavior and other related variables. Finally, with Wallance’s ideas in his empirical researches on the logic of science in sociology, the study verified and analyzed 403 valid questionnaires by structural equation model (SEM) method.
This study reached the following conclusions: First, Guanxi could be reconceptualized as a performance of Guanxi behaviors including affect investments (ganqing tou zi), reciprocal favor (renqing hui bou ) and saving face(mianzi wei hu). By analyzing the competition models, the study found that guanxi behavior could fit adequate and parsimonious characteristics more in second order factor structure model. Second, the constuction of guanxi behavior effect model included these theories: structural sociology, rational choice theory, relationship-oriented behavior, rationality-oriented behavior, “lun” and “li”. On empirical researches, the three antecedent variables: extraversion personalities, family emotional supports and harmony values, made a great impact on guanxi behavior. On the other hand, guanxi behavior also made impact on the three consequences variables: life satisfaction, procedural justice and organizational citizenship behaviors. Third, “trust” was the key mechanism to the maintenance and operation of guanxi behavior. It had not only partially mediating effect upon the relationship between guanxi behavior and procedural justice, but also moderating effect upon the relationship between guanxi behavior and the organizational citizenship behavior.
In conclusion, based on the findings, this study gave “Guanxi” a meaningful comment on management and provided suggestions for future studies.
